Audi e-tron Detroit Show Car

Despite the lack of a new name, Audi's latest take on its e-tron EV for the 2010 Detroit show is in fact a unique concept. As with the first e-tron that debuted at last year's Frankfurt show, the Detroit show e-tron concept is based on the R8's aluminum spaceframe, but is more than a foot shorter than its predecessor and nearly 500-pounds lighter. Perhaps most surprisingly, the Detroit car loses its front electric motors, meaning it does not feature Audi's signature quattro all-wheel drive.

Instead, two motors mounted on the rear axle combine for an estimated 201 hp and 1955 lb-ft of torque (the latter figure apparently continues Audi's highly suspect practice of providing multiplied torque figures).

The result is a concept that's slightly less capable than the original e-tron (0-62 mph takes an estimated 5.9 seconds) but potentially more fun thanks to its small size - it looks positively diminutive next to an R8 -- and relatively light weight (less than 3000 lbs).

It would also presumably be less expensive, though that too, would be relative given the price tag of more than $150,000 Audi will likely place on the first e-tron when it goes on sale in 2012. As with the Frankfurt e-tron concept, lithium-ion batteries mounted behind the driver provide an estimated 155 miles driving range for the Detroit show car, according to Audi.

At the moment, Audi is calling this variant an "experiment." However, the company makes no secret of its intent to market e-tron not just as a name for one vehicle, but as a distinct sub brand not unlike quattro and TDI.

The concept also makes plain Audi's intent to very gradually trickle down its electric vehicle technology into more affordable products

Audi 2050 Concept is classic city racer of the future

Imagined by Victor Uribe for the year 2050, the Audi 2050 Concept has been designed while keeping in mind a vehicle that is not only small enough to commute you easily through the crowded streets of tomorrow but also matches the essence of Audi. Developed in an effort to break the stereotype that small cars must be boring, the car is perfectly sized with features and functionality to give riders the feel of race cars. The concept will be powered by hydrogen and transmits pure sensations of a racing even at low speeds. Replacing conventional sliding doors with sliding roof is another unique feature of the vehicle. Despite that its shape is strongly inspired by the racing cars 30, like the auto union type C, and D, Audi 2050 Concept tries to capture the pure soul of those cars and turns it into a car that could be a classic in the distant future.

2010 Audi R8 Spyder Review

The car was exclusively designed, developed, and manufactured by AUDI AG's high performance private subsidiary company, quattro GmbH, and is similar to the Lamborghini Gallardo.

The fundamental construction of the R8 is based on the Audi Space Frame, and uses an aluminium monocoque which is built around space frame principles.

The car is built by quattro GmbH in a newly renovated factory at Audi's 'aluminium site' at Neckarsulm in Germany.

Audi first unveiled the R8 V10 Spyder at the 2009 Frankfurt International Motor Show in September 2009. It runs the same 5.2-litre V10 engine found in the coupe.

Maximum power is 386kW (518 PS) and peak torque is 530Nm (391 lb-ft). The 0 - 62mph sprint time is 4.1 seconds while the manual can deliver a top speed of 194mph.

Spyder R8 5.2L FSI engine carries capable of producing 525 hp maximum power and top speed of 313 kilometers per hour.
